Man Utd's Rashford Proves the Difference as Red Devils Overcome Burnley
Man Utd is back, and so is Marcus Rashford. The Red Devils emerged triumphant against Burnley in the Carabao Cup, with the England international proving to be the difference maker. With a superb performance and a match-winning goal, Rashford showed why he is one of the key players for Man Utd. In this blog post, we'll take a look at the winners, losers, and ratings of the match as the Red Devils continued their impressive run of form.
United's Slow Start
It was a case of so near yet so far for Manchester United as they returned to action with a Carabao Cup victory over Burnley. United started slowly in their first game back, with the Clarets dominating the opening exchanges and testing the United defence early on. The Red Devils failed to create many chances and were often caught out in possession, leading to some nervy moments for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side. Fortunately, United managed to hold on and remain level as the half-time whistle blew.
Rashford Comes On
With the score tied at 0-0, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer made the decisive move of bringing on Marcus Rashford in the 58th minute. Replacing Juan Mata, the young Englishman provided a spark to the United attack and almost immediately had an impact.
In the 62nd minute, he cut in from the left flank, driving past Burnley's Ben Mee and Matt Lowton, before unleashing a powerful shot that was saved by Nick Pope. It was a warning of what was to come as Rashford continued to cause problems for the Burnley defense.
In the 70th minute, he set up Scott McTominay who finished clinically for United's first goal. And then two minutes later, he scored himself when he controlled a Mason Greenwood cross, before smashing the ball into the top corner. It was a stunning strike from the England international and it was enough to see United take all three points.
Rashford's performance saw him crowned Man of the Match and it proved just how important he is for Manchester United going forward.
United Take Control
After the equalizer, United stepped up a gear and began to take control of the game. Paul Pogba was particularly impressive, spraying long passes around the park, while Marcus Rashford and Jesse Lingard caused Burnley all sorts of problems with their dribbling ability. United were now creating chances at will, and it was only a matter of time before they took the lead. It finally came in the 70th minute, as Daniel James' shot deflected off Ben Mee and looped into the back of the net.
United were now firmly in control of the game, and could have scored more but for some wasteful finishing. As the final whistle blew, United had put in an impressive performance and had fully deserved their victory over a resilient Burnley side.
Clarets Fight Back
The Clarets had been quiet in the first hour but began to find their feet late on. Ashley Barnes went close when he smashed a shot off the woodwork after some clever footwork. Dwight McNeil then tested United’s defense with a well-taken effort from the edge of the box, but the hosts held firm.
Burnley continued to press and were rewarded for their efforts with 15 minutes to go. Jack Cork laid off a pass for Johann Berg Gudmundsson and the midfielder found the back of the net with an unstoppable strike from outside the area.
The goal sparked life into the visitors, who almost snatched a late equalizer when Chris Wood fired just wide from 10 yards out. However, United’s defense was up to the task and held on for a well-deserved win.
United Win
The Red Devils took the lead in the 71st minute through a penalty from captain Harry Maguire, but Burnley fought back and equalized in the 79th minute through a header from Chris Wood. However, the game was won in the 84th minute as Marcus Rashford came off the bench to head home an Aaron Wan-Bissaka cross and put Man Utd ahead for good. United held on to their lead and booked their place in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup. The final whistle was greeted with cheers from United fans, who had witnessed a hard-fought battle between two evenly matched sides. This was the first win for United under new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, and it showed that the Red Devils are beginning to gel under his leadership.
Ratings
For Manchester United, David De Gea had a solid night in goal, while Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly defended with confidence. Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Luke Shaw offered width on the wings and combined well, and Bruno Fernandes continued his impressive form with a dominant midfield display. Marcus Rashford was the difference-maker when he came on as a substitute, finding the back of the net twice to seal the win for United.
For Burnley, goalkeeper Bailey Peacock-Farrell had a night to forget, conceding three goals. Ben Mee and James Tarkowski held their own against United's attack, but ultimately it wasn't enough to get a result. Dwight McNeil and Josh Brownhill were livelier going forward but were unable to make an impact on the scoreline. Jay Rodriguez had a few promising moments but his efforts weren't enough to help Burnley over the line.
